Why did the police not respond to calls from citizens in Savamala?

Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic said that he had initiated the control procedure regarding how the police acted during the incident in which masked persons demolished facilities in the Savamala quarter. He also said that the police were cooperative.

Jankovic told the Danas daily that the purpose of the control was to establish why the police had not reacted to the calls from citizens who reported harassment and demolition in the night of April 24th, and whether the police and the community police had participated in it.

“The police are cooperative, for the time being; they gave statements and surrendered the recordings of the night calls of the citizens. It is also good that the eyewitnesses and the citizens who were harassed in that night are still coming forward. We will look into all of that and, hopefully, will be able to publish the results of the control by the end of this week,” Jankovic stated.

The commissioner for information of public importance and protection of personal data, Rodoljub Sabic, published on his Twitter account that he had received threats because he was seeking information about the incident.

“Keep your interest in the operation of the people with balaclavas and you will have the opportunity to meet them,” reads the message that was sent to the commissioner, which he did not wish to comment on.

Unknown masked persons, wearing balaclavas, demolished several facilities in the Hercegovacka Street in the Savamala quarter with bulldozers, in the night between April 24th and 25th, and some of them harassed the passers-by. According to eyewitness accounts, the masked persons tied down the night guard at the lot and harassed him. The police did not investigate the site.
